Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Ma-Eum Su-Ryun meditation on disability acceptance, self-esteem and self-efficacy in students with physical disability, and to provide basic data for the integration education of youths with physical disability in community. This study used a one group, pretest-posttest design. A 10-weeks meditation
program for students with physical disability was offered twice a week with each session up to 40 min. 10 youths who had physical disability participated in this study. Data were collected using the Acceptance of Disability Scale, the Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale and the Self–efficacy scale. We interviewed their changes or feeling after the meditation program. The results of this study were as follows: First, The disability acceptance of the disabled youth who received the meditation program increased significantly. The scores of the areas that do not uniquely identify the disability, a sub-domain of disability acceptance, also increased. The other sub-domain, the scores of self-satisfaction area and The quality of compensation action area were increased. The self-esteem and self-efficacy of the subjects also increased significantly. In conclusion, this study suggests that the Ma-Eum Soo-Ryun meditation program has the effect of increasing disability acceptance, improving self-esteem and self-efficacy of the adolescents with disabilities. We suggest that various applications for inclusive education of the disabled youth will be continued in the future.
